Our services span seven areas of care. Across all of them, we combine the best clinical practice with data-driven insights, research, and the expertise of our partners from NUS and other institutions to continuously improve how we prevent, diagnose, and treat kidney disease.
Population Kidney Health for the Community
We care for patients with long-term kidney conditions, including those related to diabetes, high blood pressure, kidney stones, and inherited diseases. As the main kidney referral centre for NUHS, we work hand in hand with polyclinics and family practitioners to reach patients early and slow the progression of kidney disease before it becomes severe. Using health data from over 40,000 patients across three hospitals and eight polyclinics, we identify those at the highest risk and intervene early with the right treatment — ensuring fair, evidence-based care for all. Research partnerships with NUS and national collaborators ensure that the latest evidence is rapidly translated into better care for our patients and the wider community.
Acute Kidney Injury, Early Detection, and Prevention
We specialise in caring for patients who suffer acute kidney dysfunction, whether due to serious infections, cardiac diseases, cancer treatment, or major surgery. We work closely with heart specialists, intensive care teams, and cancer doctors to provide the right support at the right time. Using artificial intelligence and patient health records, we are working to predict the risk of acute kidney injury up to 48 hours in advance, allowing our teams to act early and prevent the worst outcomes. This work — developed with NUS — has also helped us use certain medications more safely, contributing to a sustained reduction in drug-related acute kidney injury rates and shorter hospital stays, facilitated by our multidisciplinary team of medical, pharmacy, and nursing colleagues.
Heart, Kidney, and Metabolic Health
The heart, kidneys, and metabolism are deeply connected. We treat patients where these systems interact — including those with heart failure affecting the kidneys, liver-related kidney problems, and high blood pressure in pregnancy. We follow the latest international treatment guidelines to reduce the risk of heart attacks, strokes, and hospital admissions. We also conduct research and quality improvement projects to understand how best to deliver this care in a way that benefits patients in the long term and makes the best use of healthcare resources.
Personalised Medicine for Complex Kidney Diseases
Some kidney conditions are caused by the immune system attacking the kidneys, by genetic factors, or by rare diseases that require highly specialised care. We tailor treatment to each individual, using kidney tissue analysis, immune testing, and genetic profiling to guide our approach. Working closely with our kidney transplant team, we support patients through every step of the kidney transplant journey — from initial assessment to long-term follow-up — including complex cases such as combined kidney and pancreas transplants. Through the NUH Kidney Precision Medicine programme, conducted in collaboration with our genetics and children's medicine teams, we are advancing care for patients with rare and inherited kidney diseases. We also participate in clinical trials to provide our patients with access to the latest treatments, including emerging cell-based therapies.
Kidney Procedures and Access Care
We offer a full range of kidney procedures, including kidney biopsies, insertion of dialysis catheters, and procedures to maintain and repair the arteriovenous access used for haemodialysis. More than 90% of our peritoneal dialysis catheter insertions are performed using a minimally invasive technique — a small incision under local anaesthesia, guided by ultrasound — thereby expediting wound healing and facilitating dialysis initiation. We pioneered Singapore's urgent-start peritoneal dialysis programme in 2017, allowing patients to begin low-volume peritoneal dialysis within two weeks when needed. We use real-time monitoring data to spot problems with dialysis access early, reducing emergencies and improving patient safety. Our educational leadership is demonstrated through support for regional training workshops and conferences, cementing NUH's role as a centre for knowledge sharing across Asia.
Sustainable Dialysis Care
We provide the full range of dialysis options for patients with kidney failure, including hospital-based, community-based, and home-based programmes. Our strategic focus is on expanding home dialysis — both home blood-filtering (haemodialysis) and a gentler form of dialysis done through the abdomen (peritoneal dialysis) — which offer patients greater freedom and quality of life. We actively support patients in making this choice through education and personalised care planning by our multidisciplinary team of nurses, pharmacists, dietitians, and social workers. NUH also conducted the first study of its kind in a tropical country measuring the environmental impact of a dialysis centre, and we are committed to reducing our carbon footprint in line with Singapore's net-zero goals. Our research in this area, conducted with NUS and international partners, is generating the evidence needed to make dialysis care more sustainable for patients and the planet.
Living Well and Leaving Well
For patients with advanced kidney disease, we focus on quality of life, comfort, and making decisions that truly reflect each person's wishes and values. Our Kidney Failure Board, launched in 2023, brings together kidney specialists, geriatricians, nurses, dietitians, and social workers to help patients with complex health needs make the best decisions about their care — including whether dialysis is the right path. This approach has significantly reduced uncertainty in treatment planning and helped more patients choose a care path aligned with their personal goals. We also work with community care teams, home nursing services, and hospice partners to ensure patients are well supported wherever they are, throughout their entire kidney disease journey.

We bring specialist care closer to patients through strong community partnerships, empower patients to take an active role in their own health, and pursue environmentally responsible practices in everything we do.
NUH Nephrology trains the next generation of kidney specialists through our nationally accredited residency programme and supports medical, nursing, and pharmacy students from NUS and the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine. We also welcome doctors from Singapore and abroad for advanced training in specialist areas, including kidney transplantation, diagnostic and interventional nephrology, home dialysis, and kidney supportive care.
Our research spans the full spectrum of kidney disease—from community health, prevention, digital medicine, and medical devices to precision medicine and clinical trials. Through partnerships with NUS and national and international collaborators, we develop new treatments and models of care that improve lives and advance kidney medicine worldwide.
