In accordance with  the Ministry of Health (MOH) guidelines, it is mandatory to wear masks in all hospital settings. This precautionary measure is in place to safeguard both visitors and our staff from infectious diseases.

Life-Threatening Conditions 

In the Emergency Medicine Department (EMD), priority will be given to patients facing life-threatening conditions, such as persistent chest pain and those with more serious and/or multiple injuries. For non-urgent conditions, please be aware that waiting time can be at least 5 hours. We appreciate your understanding in these situations.

Non-emergency Conditions and Symptoms

When to visit the emergency department

For non-emergency conditions, please visit the nearest , polyclinic or the 24-hour Urgent Care Centre (UCC) at Alexandra Hospital. In the event that further attention is required, a referral letter to our EMD will be provided.

GPFirst / PaedEngage Programme

Upon assessment by a participating GP, if you or your family member require accident & emergency (A&E) attention, a referral under the GPFirst programme or PaedsEngage programme will be issued.   

When presenting at the EMD or UCC with a valid GPFirst / PaedsEngage referral, a $50 subsidy on the prevailing fees at the respective A&E or UCC will be granted (subjected to terms and conditions). 

 

Documents to Bring

Please bring along the original of the following documents for registration at EMD: 

1. Identification Documents: 

  • NRIC / Birth Certificate / Digital NRIC via Singpass App or 
  • Passport or 
  • Other identification documents (e.g. Work Permit, Employment Pass, S Pass)

2. Medical Benefits Documents (if applicable, subject to eligibility): 

  • Civil Service Card (CSC) 
  • Insurance card 
  • Letter of Guarantee (Employer or insurance company) 
  • Blood Donor Card

Your Journey With Us

Your journey at Emergency Department

1. Registration 

EstimatedWaiting Time: 5 - 15 minutes

During the process of registration, our Service Associates will verify your identification details and update essential information such as your address and contact details, when necessary.  

The current charges for EMD services, covering standard investigations, services and medications, can be found here. Additional charges may apply for non-standard investigations or drugs. Please note that charges for emergency services are non-Medisave claimable.  

2. Triage 

Estimated Waiting Time: 15 - 60 minutes 

Our nurses will take your vital signs such as temperature, pulse, respiration and blood pressure, conduct a health assessment to identify the nature of the problem, and direct you to an appropriate area for consultation and treatment. Various waiting areas for designated for patients with different priority levels.  

3. Consultation and Treatment 

Estimated Waiting Time: 1.5 - 3 hours 

Physical examinations involving blood tests, X-rays or stay-in observation (as required) will be performed. We appreciate your understanding for the potential longer waiting time that may arise from factors such as: 

  1. An increase in the number of patients 
  2. Overcrowding due to epidemics 
  3. Casualties and emergencies requiring immediate medical attention 
  4. Waiting time for X-ray and laboratory results 

4. Collection of Medication 

Estimated Waiting Time: 15 - 45 minutes  

Upon prescription of medications by our doctors, patients fit for discharge will be directed to the Main Building Pharmacy for medication collection. A pharmacist provides instructions on the correct way to take your medications. 

5. Admission / Discharge 

Discharge 
Being discharged means you can return home without the need for further observation. Our nurse will prepare the following documents (as required): 

  1. Medical Certificate 
  2. Medicine Prescriptions 
  3. Referral Letters (if a follow-up is required)* 

* Longer waiting time can be expected. 

Admission 

Estimated Waiting Time: 3 - 20 hours  

Being admitted indicates the need for further observation and treatment in an inpatient ward after the doctor has assessed your condition. The admission process may take up to 20 hours, depending on bed availability. 

Financial Counselling 

Financial counselling will be provided before admission, where information on available ward classes, estimated costs, and applicable subsidies will be explained. Our staff will guide you through the admission process and provide details on room types. For more information on financial matters please refer to our fees & charges.

Preparation for Admission 

We will arrange a ward appropriate for the treatment of your condition. During periods of high patient volume, admission may take longer. Your understanding and patience are greatly appreciated during these times.

The Children's Emergency service is part of the Khoo Teck Puat–National University Children's Medical Institute's commitment to delivering seamless, comprehensive medical care. Our doctors manage the initial presentations of children for all conditions. We work closely with consultants across various paediatric subspecialties to ensure the children receive quality care. 

Situated adjacent to the Adult Emergency Department, our Children's Emergency Service has been thoughtfully designed with child-friendly amenities, vibrant decorations and engaging murals to create a comforting environment.
