Care at NUH

Otolaryngology - Head & Neck Surgery

2025/01/24
The Department of Otolaryngology - Head & Neck Surgery was established in June 1987, upon the appointment of Prof Yeoh Kian Hian as Chief of Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) at the National University Hospital. Initially occupying a modest clinical space of 1,600 square feet clinic with three consulting rooms, a treatment room and an area for basic audiological assessment, the department opened its doors to the public in January 1988.

Today, our clinics, catering to both non-subsidised and subsidised patients, are located at the Medical Centre on Level 15 of NUH. Equipped with modern facilities for patients and staff, the department has grown from a small offshoot of general surgery to a well-defined and independent discipline.

The department is committed to providing clinical care of international standards, engaging in research that benefits Singaporeans, and offering quality education to undergraduate and postgraduate students in the field of Otolaryngology Head & Neck Surgery.

Our Vision

The Department of Otolaryngology - Head & Neck Surgery aims to be the Regional Centre of Excellence in the field.

Our Mission

Our department seeks to provide comprehensive clinical care to every patient with needs in Otolaryngology.

Our Research
Our Research Team

Research is one of the fundamentals of our department. Our strategy is to develop focused areas of research based on research questions founded on relevant clinical questions. Our academic and clinical staffs are involved in many research areas in ENT and related cell molecular biology. Additionally, our research interests have extended into the identification of genetic predisposition and gene-environmental interaction on disease expression of allergic rhinitis, hearing disorders and nasopharyngeal carcinoma. During the last few years, there have been increasing intra-departmental and international collaborations in our department.

Our department has a research laboratory in the MD4 Level 2 which is managed by our Research Professor, Professor Wang De Yun. Prof Wang assists in corresponding research activities, collaborations and departmental research meetings in order to share research initiatives. Since 2000, 9 PhD and 6 MSc students have successfully graduated from our department. Currently, more than 10 research assistants and staff who are working on various research projects are in our department.

Our major research areas include 3 significant fields led by surgeons from the department and funded by various research grants from A*STAR, Biomedical Research Council (BMRC), National Medical Research Council (NMRC), Ministry of Education and Academic Research Funding of National University of Singapore, EDB Proof of Concept Grants, National Health Group (NHG), and etc.
