The National University Centre for Trauma is redefining how Singapore delivers trauma care. Rather than various hospitals responding separately, we bring together injury prevention, emergency care, rehabilitation, recovery, and research into a single, connected trauma system.
As Singapore’s leading centre for integrated adult and paediatric trauma services, we manage the highest annual trauma caseload nationally. Serving the Western region, we support care for over 50,000 injuries each year. By integrating system leadership, clinical excellence, community impact, and research, we represent a new generation of trauma care delivery.
Launched as Singapore’s first regionalised trauma system, we are anchored at NUH and extend across Ng Teng Fong General Hospital and Alexandra Hospital. We deliver comprehensive adult and paediatric trauma care while coordinating system-wide readiness across the Western region.
We oversee and actively integrate all components of the trauma care continuum through aligning pre hospital partners, emergency services, surgical specialties, rehabilitation, and community agencies into a single, coordinated network. This enables seamless day-to-day management and a robust response during mass casualty incidents or periods of surge demand.
We have implemented standardised, protocol-driven trauma response procedures across our campuses, including CODE Trauma activation and hybrid transfusion protocols. These significantly reduce time to critical interventions and ensure timely, consistent, and high-quality care, regardless of where patients come through.
We pioneered the introduction of Resuscitative Endovascular Balloon Occlusion of the Aorta (REBOA) in Singapore, a life-saving emergency procedure for patients with severe haemorrhagic shock.
As a tertiary university hospital, we partner with the National University of Singapore (NUS) Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine to deliver advanced medical training. We leverage Virtual Reality (VR) and Mixed Reality (MR) technologies to simulate emergency scenarios and infrastructure response, strengthening clinical readiness and operational capability.
Our care extends well beyond the emergency phase. We prioritise survivorship and measure success not just by survival, but by functional recovery, rehabilitation, and re-integration into society.
To enhance long-term recovery and psychosocial well-being, we have also established multidisciplinary polytrauma clinics and patient-centred case discussions.
In 2023, we launched Singapore’s first trauma survivor support group, providing a safe space for individuals to connect, share experiences, and support one another. Through biannual activities like art therapy, the group fosters healing and resilience. Membership has grown steadily, with several participants sharing their recovery journey publicly to support injury prevention and reduce stigma.
We host Professor Ross Davenport as Visiting Consultant under the Yeo Ghim Seng Visiting Professorship. He is a surgeon scientist, and trauma and vascular surgeon at the Royal London Major Trauma Centre, Barts Health NHS Trust, and Clinical Lead for the Northeast London and Essex Trauma Network.
This appointment has established a formal collaboration with The Blizard Institute at Queen Mary University of London. Through shared trauma registry data and advanced analytics, we jointly examine injury patterns and treatment outcomes for ongoing improvements in trauma care.
Regionally, our system leadership translates into real world outcomes. Through coordinated pre hospital right siting, robust audit and benchmarking, multidisciplinary care coordination, and strong injury prevention efforts, we have reduced trauma fatality rates across the Western region and improved survival and recovery outcomes.
By combining regional leadership, national collaboration, and international knowledge exchange, NUH is a recognised leader in trauma care, research, and prevention.
Over the past decade, our trauma fatality rate has decreased from 10.1% to 4.8%, significantly below the national rate of 6.0%. This reflects that more lives are saved through faster, better-coordinated, evidence based care.
In 2024, we managed 29% of Singapore's total trauma workload. NUH also recorded the lowest Trauma and Injury Severity Score (TRISS) Adjusted Fatality Rate among Tier 1 and 2 trauma cases nationally – a benchmark that accounts for injury severity to enable fair comparison across hospitals.
