Dear Reader,
As we enter the second year of EnvisioningHealth—Changing Lives One Idea at a Time, we’d like to thank you for your support, and look forward to continue sharing the latest updates from NUH.
Digital transformation is set to play a key role in improving hospital operations and driving better patient outcomes amid rising costs and manpower shortages.
To stay ahead of the digital curve, we are building a digital-first hospital that aims to enhance patient experience and bring services conveniently to their fingertips. Already, six in ten of NUH outpatients make use of the NUHS App to actively participate in their care, ranging from appointment scheduling to requesting for medication refills and recording their health data on the go.
Artificial intelligence (AI) is being used to boost hospital operations, from patient management to administrative tasks. Our Endeavour AI platform features a live dashboard that gathers, processes, and displays key medical information of all patients. AI tools such as Pathfinder, which is integrated with Endeavour AI, allow staff in the Emergency Medicine Department to make data-driven decisions about how best to allocate manpower, hospital beds and essential support services.
AI-enabled technologies are increasingly integral to managing diseases. For instance, AI underpins the early detection, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of gastrointestinal-related diseases at our National University Centre for Digestive Health. A newly developed AI-powered software improves the speed and accuracy of breast cancer diagnosis.
Transitioning to a digital-first NUH is a gradual process that requires systematic upskilling of our staff. This is driven by the new Kent Ridge Office of Innovation, our latest initiative, which advocates for innovation that transcends gadgets and apps to include rethinking the ways in which we approach our daily work.
And to support the transformation, we are redeveloping our ageing infrastructure which has been in use since 1985 and now nearing 40 years of service. The new hospital allows us to be more connected with our patients—both physically and digitally—to better meet their healthcare needs.
We hope you will like the stories we have lined up for you.
Yours sincerely,
Professor Aymeric Lim
