Professor Benjamin Ong is a Senior Consultant with the Division of Neurology, National University Hospital. He is currently Senior Vice President (Health Education & Resources) of the National University of Singapore. He served as Director of Medical Services, Ministry of Health, Singapore, from January 2014 to January 2020.
Prof Ong obtained his MBBS at the National University of Singapore in 1981. He went on to train in Neurology in Singapore and the UK, with fellowship attachments at the Institute of Neurology (UK) and the Institute for Molecular Medicine (Oxford, UK).
His research interests are in neuroepidemiology and neuroimmunology. He has remained active in Neurology Specialist Training as well as in postgraduate internal medicine.
Prof Ong also has helped develop Healthcare IT and worked on process improvement in patient care delivery.
Prof Ong received the National Day Public Administration Medal (Silver) for his leadership contributions in 2009 and the Public Administration Medal (Gold) for outstanding efficiency, competence and industry in 2015. In 2020, Professor Ong was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal by the President of the Republic of Singapore for his contributions to Singapore's healthcare.
