Biosketch

Dr Chua Wei Liang is a Consultant Surgeon in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at National University Hospital and Alexandra Hospital. He is also Deputy Division Head of Hip and Knee Surgery at National University Hospital, and Deputy Head of Department at Alexandra Hospital.

He obtained his medical degree from University College London in 2006 and subsequently his Masters of Medicine from the National University of Singapore (NUS) in 2015. Two years later, he completed the NUHS Orthopaedic Residency. In the same year, he was accepted as a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh. 

He is fellowship trained, having completed 2 overseas fellowships in Orthopaedic Surgery. Firstly, an AO Trauma Travelling Fellowship in E Da Hospital, Taiwan in 2017. Followed by a fellowship in hip and knee surgery at Wrightington Hospital, Wigan, UK- a major joint replacement centre of excellence in the United Kingdom.

Dr Chua’s primary interest is in hip and knee arthroplasty, including uni-compartmental knee replacement and navigated or robotic joint replacement. He is also trained in anterior approach total hip replacement.

Beyond clinical duties, Dr Chua is actively involved in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, NUS under the clinical faculty scheme. He teaches regularly on topics of general orthopaedics and hip and knee pathologies. 

In addition, as deputy Head of Department at Alexandra Hospital, he is involved in setting up of the Orthopaedic Surgery service at Alexandra Hospital, with plans to develop a joint replacement centre there by 2027 when the new hospital is built.

He favours a patient centric approach when it comes to looking after his patients, with a focus on rapid recovery and minimal post surgical pain.
