Biosketch

Professor Hugo PS Van Bever joined NUH as a Senior Consultant in Paediatric Allergy and Immunology and NUS as a Professor in June 2002. He completed his medical studies at the State University of Ghent, Belgium in 1978 and did his training in paediatrics at Children's Hospital, State University of Ghent, Belgium from 1978 to 1983. He became a Resident thereafter in Paediatric Allergy and Pulmonology, University of Antwerp, Belgium from 1984 to 1993. There, he became an Associate Professor in 1993 and Professor in 1997. Prof Van Bever was also the Head of the Department of Paediatrics, University of Antwerp, Belgium from 1997 to 2001. 

Prof Van Bever is a member of various national and international societies, including The European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (EAACI), The American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (AAAAI), The European Society of Paediatric Allergy and Clinical Immunology (ESPACI), and The European Respiratory Society (ERS). He was the Past Secretary of the Group Paediatric Asthma and Allergy of the ERS, Past Secretary of The Belgian Society of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (BELSACI) and Board Member of The Flemish Group of Allergologists. Since 2002, he has been a member of APAPARI (Asian Pacific Association of Paediatric Allergy, Respirology and Immunology). Currently, he is President of APAPARI (2019 – 2021).

Prof Van Bever was the Associate Editor of The European Respiratory Journal from 1993 to 1998. Currently, he is an Editorial Board member of Paediatric Allergy and Immunology. He is a reviewer for The European Journal of Paediatrics, Paediatric Allergy and Immunology, Allergy, Paediatric Pulmonology, The European Respiratory Journal, Paediatric Research, Paediatrics and Archives Diseases of Childhood. 

Prof Van Bever defended his PhD thesis successfully in June 1993 at the University of Antwerp. The title of this thesis is "Late asthmatic reactions in childhood asthma and influence of specific immunotherapy upon the late asthmatic reaction". He has published more than 350 papers in national and international journals.

His main research interest areas are paediatric allergy and paediatric respiratory infections. These include immunotherapy, atopic eczema, food allergy and primary prevention of allergy. In the area of respiratory infections, his main interests are on viral bronchiolitis, and on relationship between viral infections and allergy.
