Biosketch

Dr Ian Mathews is an Emergency Medicine Physician with the National University Health System (NUHS) with clinical responsibilities at both National University Hospital and Alexandra Hospital. He is also the Deputy Group Chief Technology Officer for the hospital group, focusing on big data in healthcare and artificial intelligence solutions for clinical problems, as well as its application to innovation, and enterprise. In this role, Dr Mathews engages and educates clinicians, and inspires them towards developing and implementing next generation AI technology and innovative medical devices.  

Besides clinical work, Dr Mathews teaches as an Assistant Professor at the NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, where he combines classroom academic rigour with practical bedside training across many levels of learners. 

As a 2017 Singapore-Stanford Biodesign Fellow, Dr Mathews has learnt the process of solving clinical unmet needs by developing patient-centric medical technology, from ideation and innovation through to implementation. He concurrently advises medtech startups in various fields, and different stages of the innovation process. 

Dr Mathews is a graduate of Harvard’s Global Health Delivery Program, having an avid interest in global health and technology’s application to healthcare, particularly in emerging fields such as blockchain and artificial intelligence.

On the National level, Dr Mathews was recently nominated as an ASEAN youth fellow in the inaugural ASEAN Youth Fellowship 2018, which aims to develop high performing young leaders across the 3P – public, private and people – sectors regionally for a resilient and innovative ASEAN by fostering better friendship, dialogue and collaboration.

Dr Mathews firmly believes that technological solutions can provide access and help reduce inequity in global healthcare delivery.
