Biosketch

Dr Janice Lam is a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at the Department of Ophthalmology, National University Hospital (NUH) and Alexandra Hospital (AH). She received her formal medical training at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore (NUS) and completed her Ophthalmology specialist training at the National University Hospital (NUH). 

Having received the NUHS Learning Development Award, Dr Lam completed a prestigious clinical fellowship in Paediatric Ophthalmology & Strabismus surgery at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London and served as an honorary fellow at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children, specialising in paediatric cataract surgery and complex squints in children and adults. During her year in London, she also completed a 6-month fellowship at the Retinoblastoma Unit at Royal London Hospital and is currently part of the Ophthalmic Oncology team at NUH. Her current clinical work also includes the management of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) and myopia in children.

In addition, Dr Lam practices general ophthalmology and performs cataract surgery at both NUH and AH on a weekly basis. She has an interest in clinical and academic research and has authored several publications. For her research excellence, she was awarded the Association for Research in Vision & Ophthalmology (ARVO) Travel grant to Seattle, USA in 2013.

Aside from clinical work and research, Dr Lam also actively supports the education of medical students, junior doctors and residents. She is the Undergraduate Medical Deputy Education Director of Ophthalmology and a member of the Undergraduate Curriculum committee at the NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine. For her work in undergraduate and post-graduate medical education, Dr Lam has received several awards, including the NUHS Young Clinician Mentor Award (2018), the NUS Junior Doctor Teaching Award (2017 to 2018) and the Dean’s Award for Teaching Excellence (2019). She currently also serves as the Co-Lead for Optometry Education at the NUS Centre for Innovation and Precision Eye Health.

Dr Lam strongly believes in giving back actively to society. She has participated in pro bono cataract trips to remote areas in need of eye care and surgery in China, Indonesia, Nepal and Cambodia.
