Adjunct Professor Malcolm Mahadevan graduated from the National University of Singapore in 1991 and obtained his Fellowship Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh in 1995 and is a fellow at the Royal College of Physicians Edinburgh. He is Group Chief, Emergency Medicine, Designated Institutional Official (DIO) at National University Health System and a Senior Consultant in the Emergency Medicine Department, National University Hospital, Singapore. He has been with NUH since 1996 and was the Head, Emergency Medicine from 2010 till March 2020. Under his exemplary leadership, the department grew from strength to strength and scaled new heights in patient care, education and research.
He has authored the chapter Observation Medicine in Rosen’s Emergency Medicine Textbook and has published substantial papers in his areas of interest which include critical care of the septic patient and early goal directed therapy, respiratory disease in the EMD including asthma, COPD and pneumonia. Other interest areas include clinical indices in the EMD and improving clinical quality as well as interactive bedside teaching.
He was awarded two MOH Human Manpower Development scholarships - the first in 1995 to UK (Edinburgh Royal Infirmary and St James University Hospital) and in 1999 to the US as the first International Fellow in Observation Medicine (University of Hartford Medical School & Yale University). In 2015 he was awarded the Singapore Healthcare Humanity Awards as well as the Team National Medical Excellence Awards twice, once in year 2010 and also in year 2014. In year 2020 he was awarded the National Day Award for Public Administration Medal Bronze and serve as an abiding inspiration to the Community to constantly strive for excellence. He has successfully completed the Master of Health Professions Education (MHPE).
He has held multiple appointments at NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine covering admissions, curriculum, electives and faculty assessment. He has been a Core Faculty and is a member of the Clinical Competency Committee (CCC). At the national level, he is member of the Residency Advisory Committee (RAC for Emergency Medicine) appointed by MOH and is a Faculty of Medical Expert (FME) by AMS (Academy Medicine of Singapore). He is the lead person in establishing Observation Medicine in Singapore since 2000 with a citation by PS Health. He is responsible for the setting up of the first Observation Unit (Extended Diagnostic and Treatment Unit or EDTU) in Singapore in 2004. Adj Prof Mahadevan also played a key role in NUHS’s fight against COVID-19. He started off volunteering at Sungei Tengah Lodge caring for Singapore's migrant friends and set up three community care facilities (CCF), for which he was the overall medical lead.
