Dr Melvin Tan holds dual appointments as a Consultant Surgeon in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at National University Hospital (NUH) and Alexandra Hospital (AH).
Dr Tan completed his basic medical degree at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore. He subsequently embarked on Residency training in Orthopaedic Surgery at National University Hospital. During his specialist training programme, he obtained various post-graduate qualifications and was accepted as a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh at completion of his specialist training.
Dr Tan specialises in disorders of the hip and knee joints and lower limb, including traumatic injuries, sporting injuries and degenerative conditions such as osteoarthritis. His interest is in joint preservation, cartilage and ligament restoration, osteotomies and joint replacement surgeries. He believes in a step-wise, multi-pronged approach in clinical management and emphasizes on customising every patients’ care and rehabilitation to their needs. He is also well trained to manage general orthopaedic conditions.
Apart from clinical work, Dr Tan is also active in educational and administrative roles within the healthcare system. He is a clinical tutor at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine and engages regularly in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in Orthopaedic Surgery. He was Chief Resident representative for Orthopaedic Surgery in the 6th Singapore Chief Residency Program (SCRP) in 2019, which is a year-long national programme led by the Healthcare Leadership College, Ministry of Health to nurture clinicians in leadership, teaching, management and policy competencies. He also served as Secretary, Vice-Chairman and Chairman for Singapore Orthopaedic Trainee’s Committee of the Singapore Orthopaedic Association. He also finds time to undertake research and has published in peer-reviewed journals.
