Adj. Associate Professor Ramanathan is an Adult Cardiac Intensivist at the Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit (CTICU) at the National University Heart Centre, Singapore (NUHCS). He had his speciality training in Cardiac Anaesthesiology from India and is trained in Intensive Care Medicine from Brisbane, Australia. He is trained in the management of critically ill cardiac patients and has expertise in the management of patients with mechanical cardiac support in ICU. He completed his Diploma in Echocardiography [Dip Echo] and Masters in Clinical Ultrasound from the University of Melbourne and was awarded the honorary fellowship (FCCP) by the American College of Chest Physicians for his contributions to critical care. He worked as a consultant at the Robina Hospital in Gold Coast briefly before joining NUHCS in 2013.
He is currently the Director for the ICU Fellowship Programme, National University Hospital (NUH), as well as the Advanced Fellowship Training Programmes, that has trained intensivists from around the world - some of whom are currently leading intensive care units in various countries. He is the chair of the Core Curriculum Committee of the CTVS Residency programme at NUHCS. He also serves as the Supervisor of Training at NUH for the College of Intensive Care Medicine (CICM) in Australia.
A/Prof. Ramanathan has been instrumental in establishing simulation based courses and training programmes for medical specialists, residents and undergraduates in the region, educating them on various aspects of intensive care medicine and extracorporeal life support. A/Prof. Ramanathan is closely associated with the National ECMO Standing Committee at the Ministry of Health in Singapore. He currently leads the courses workgroup at the ECMO education Committee at the Extracorporeal Life Support Organisation (ELSO), USA and is the Co-chair of the Scientific Oversight Committee and the Data Review Committee at the ELSO. He is the regional mentor for European Diploma in Echocardiography trainees and is the approved echocardiography trainer for CICM, Australia.
In addition to his commitment to clinical excellence and medical education, A/Prof. Ramanathan is the research lead for CTICU and has been actively involved in research programmes involving post-operative care and extracorporeal support. He has published several papers and has been an invited speaker at conferences and workshops. He is the lead site investigator for the multi centre APPIRED trial and the co-principal investigator for the APTREAT trial, both of which look at reducing post-operative complications in patients following cardiac surgeries. He mentors medical students, residents and clinical fellows in various research projects in CTICU and his team has presented and won laurels at various international conferences.
