Professor Shamal Das De specialises in disorders of the hip, knee, foot and ankle, as well as general orthopaedics. His special areas of interest are in surgical treatment of injuries and degenerative disorder of the lower limbs including surgical expertise on primary and revision total knee and hip replacements especially minimally invasive total hip joint replacements. Special interest in treating avascular necrosis of the hip and knee.
Presently, he is a full Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at NUS and Senior Consultant of Foot and Ankle Division at NUHS. He was the Head of the Division of Adult Reconstructive Surgery till 2010 and the Head of the Foot & Ankle Division.
Professor Das De is actively involved in medical student teaching at NUS and was the Director of Undergraduate Teaching till July 2013 and remains active as a senior advisor. He holds numerous positions at various committees of the medical faculty at NUS. He is the co-ordinator for South East Asia of the Indian Orthopaedic Association (IOA) and examiner for the MBBS at NUS, MMed examination (Malaysia & NUS), and the FRCS (Edinburgh) Orthopaedic Specialist examination in Hong Kong and Singapore. He is a Past-President of the Singapore Orthopaedic Association, and past Vice-President of both the Asia Pacific Arthroplasty Society (APAS) and the Singapore Osteoporosis Society. He was the Chairman of the Orthopaedic Specialist Training Committee (STC) and the FPTC (Faculty Promotion and Tenure Committee) at NUS and a member of the UPTC (University Promotion and Tenure Committee) till June 2012.
Professor Das De is the author of over 90 scientific research articles, and 18 books chapters and over 290 conference papers, posters and guest lectures locally and internationally. He is on the editorial board of the Journal of Foot Surgery (India) and reviewer of scientific articles submitted to the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery (American), Clinical Orthopaedic and Related Research journal (USA), Injury Journal (UK), Journal of Orthopaedic Surgery (Hong Kong), Indian Orthopaedic Journal and local journals Singapore Medical Journal and the Annals of the Academy of Medicine, Singapore, and reviewer of National Medical Research Council research grants.
