Dr Yew Tong Wei is a Senior Consultant at the Division of Endocrinology, National University Hospital (NUH), and Assistant Professor at Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore.

Recognising the challenges and complexity faced by individuals living with diabetes, Dr Yew champions the delivery of person-centred, integrated and individualised diabetes care. As Deputy Director for the Centre for Chronic Disease Prevention and Management, National University Health System (NUHS), he leads the Personalised Care and Support Planning program which spans across NUH, National University Polyclinics and Regional Health System, transforming traditional consultations into meaningful conversations, to promote shared decision making and better support for self-management. His work in this area was recognised with the NUHS-Mochtar Riady Pinnacle Team Award in 2022. He has served as expert faculty for the National DM Collaborative, National Improvement Unit, resource panelist for the Patient Engagement Working Group, and member of the Care Team Education Workgroup for Ministry of Health, Singapore. He chairs the NUHS Patient and Family Advocacy Council, and is a WE CARE Arbinger Outward Mindset In-house Facilitator and People Leader for NUHS.

He also has keen interests in the area of gestational diabetes, diabetes in pregnancy and thyroid disorders in pregnancy. He was lead investigator for the SMART-GDM study, the largest randomised control trial using a smartphone coaching app among women with gestational diabetes, which showed better glycaemic control and neonatal outcomes. He was awarded the National Medical Research Council Individual Research Grant - New Investigator Grant in 2016, and the NUHS Clinician Scientist Programme Award in 2017.

Dr Yew is Program Director for the NUHS Endocrinology Senior Residency Program and previously core faculty member of the NUHS Internal Medicine Residency Program. He is a passionate teacher actively involved in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education. He was named the ‘Best Young Educator’ in the Residents’ Choice Awards for two consecutive years in 2013 and 2014, received the UMC Teaching Award (Outstanding Tutor for Phase 3 Medicine Posting) in 2016/2017 and the NUHS Education Collaboration Award 2021.

He is past treasurer and executive committee member of the Endocrine and Metabolic Society of Singapore. In his free time, he enjoys doing Chinese calligraphy, painting and seal carvings, and his artwork has been exhibited internationally. He also contributes regularly to columns in print media where he writes about heart-warming stories encountered in the course of his work.

Dr Yew graduated with distinction from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Malaya in 2005. He was subsequently conferred Membership of the Royal Colleges of Physicians (United Kingdom) and completed Advanced Specialty Training in Endocrinology at the National University Hospital, Singapore. He received the Academic Medicine Development Award to pursue a fellowship in integrated diabetes care at the Medical Research Institute, Ninewells Hospital and Medical School, University of Dundee, Scotland from 2014–2015.
