Dr Liang Zhen Chang is an Associate Consultant with the Division of Musculoskeletal Oncology at the National University Hospital, and with the Division of Hip and Knee Surgery at Ng Teng Fong General Hospital. He is a clinician scientist, and a double board-certified orthopaedic surgeon with the Royal College of Surgeons (Edinburgh) and the International Society of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology (SICOT). He graduated from the NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine in 2011 and achieved his postgraduate membership with the Royal College of Surgeons (England) in 2015. He completed his Orthopaedic training with the National University Health System, and was appointed as a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (Edinburgh), and Academy of Medicine (Singapore) in 2024.
Dr Liang has a subspeciality interest in all aspects of Orthopaedic Oncology, Adult Reconstruction and Sports Surgery. He has an avid interest in bone and soft tissue tumors, and also sees patients across the spectrum of hip and knee surgery, including degenerative, sports related and traumatic injuries. As part of his training, he has completed advanced courses in both hip and knee joint replacements, sports arthroscopy as well as a Diploma in Sports Medicine conferred by the International Olympic Committee. Dr Liang also has a keen interest in the management of bone and soft tissue infections. He completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (Distinction) with the University of Edinburgh, United Kingdom.
Dr Liang’s research interest is in the area of biomaterials, musculoskeletal infections and oncology. He was awarded the NUS Outstanding Undergraduate Researcher Prize in 2010, and subsequently as a resident, was awarded the NUHS Residency Research Award (Gold) in 2021. He was conferred the National Outstanding Clinician Scientist Resident Award in 2023. Dr Liang completed both a PhD and an MBA with the NUS Graduate School for Integrative Sciences and Engineering (NGS) and NUS Business School under the prestigious NGS and Tan Kah Kee Postgraduate Scholarships. His PhD thesis is entitled “Utilizing Synthetic Polymers for the antibacterial functionalization of implant constructs to prevent Orthopaedic Infections”. This novel body of research work won him the P Balasubramaniam Young Orthopaedic Investigator Award in 2023. To date, he has published >25 papers in high impact journals and has 7 patents assigned for his innovative research work.
Dr Liang is also actively involved in medical education at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. He believes in holistic and cost-effective care and leaves no stone unturned to ensure the best care for his patients.
