Dr Sean Lee is an Associate Consultant in the Division of Minimally Invasive Surgery at the National University Hospital (NUH). He graduated from the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore (NUS) in 2013, and commenced his General Surgery Residency training in 2014. He spent close to two years working at a Tumour Immunology Laboratory at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) in Boston, USA from 2016 to 2018.
He was also the previous Deputy Chief Resident of the hospital’s General Surgery Residency Programme from 2021 to 2022. During his tenure, within his department, he facilitated COVID-19 emergency manpower planning and assisted in the implementation of a new medical records platform (NGEMR). He obtained his Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh in 2023 and was accredited as a Specialist in General Surgery by the Specialist Accreditation Board.
Dr Sean specialises in Hernia and Abdominal Wall reconstructive surgeries. He operates in NUH as well as in Alexandra Hospital. He also does emergency General Surgery work regularly and elective gastroscopies and colonoscopies.
He is a member of the Asia Pacific Hernia Society (APHS) after emerging amongst the top 5 scorers of the Hernia Advanced Workshop in Hat Yai, Thailand in 2023. He is active as an invited speaker in regional and international conferences for APHS and the Endoscopic Laparoscopic Surgeons of Asia (ELSA). He also participates in outreach programmes to developing countries under ELSA.
Being a strong advocate for patient safety, he has been appointed as Deputy Department Patient Safety Officer (PSO). During safety incidents, he assists the hospital and department PSO with root cause analyses and safety huddles to increase patient safety awareness and decrease medical errors.
Dr Sean is appointed as an Adjunct Lecturer under the Adjunct Clinician Educator scheme by Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, NUS. He is currently the Phase III Surgery Posting Director where he plans undergraduate surgical curriculum and facilitates the First Professional MBBS examinations for the third-year medical students.
He also conducts postgraduate surgical teaching sessions for junior doctors and mentors residents from the General Surgery Residency Programme.
For his passion in education, he has been awarded various teaching awards such as the Junior Doctor Teaching Award, Young Clinician Mentor Award and Great Teacher Awards under Interactive and Didactic Teaching by NUH and NUS.
