Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure in which the size of the breast is enhanced with implants (with saline or silicone). This procedure can be performed either through an incision made under the breast (inframammary) or in the axilla. The implants will be placed under the pectoralis muscle of the chest.
Both saline and silicone implants are safe for use in breast augmentation. Silicone implants feel more natural and have better aesthetic results than saline implants. However, a larger scar is required to insert a silicone implant.
Most breast augmentation procedures are performed as a day surgery procedure and hence you will not need to stay overnight in the hospital. However, you will be required to return to the clinic for review after surgery.There will be temporary soreness, swelling, bruising and change in nipple sensation in the initial recovery period. There may also be pain, which can be minimized with appropriate analgesia. You will also be given advice on use of suitable garments.
Some of the possible complications such as wound infection, bleeding, infection, asymmetry, increase or decrease in sensitivity of the nipples or breast skin may occur. Hardening of the tissue around the implant (capsular contracture), leak or rupture of implants may occur. Revision or change of implants may be required after 10 to 15 years.
Studies have not shown any correlation between implants and increased risk of breast cancer.
Implants are not likely to conceal any palpable breast lumps. However, during mammographic examination, additional views may be required to clearly visualize the entire breast.
