Pneumonia is an infection that affects one or both lungs, and causes the air sacs, or alveoli, of the lungs to fill up with fluid or pus. Bacteria, viruses or fungi may cause pneumonia Patients may exhibit cough, yellowish or green phlegm and fever. Chest x-ray shows infected lungs.
Antibiotics are used to treat this common condition.
We aim to improve outcomes in our patients with pneumonia by accurate diagnosis and classification of severity at the emergency department (ED) following well-established guidelines. This programme enables low-risk patients to be managed safely and more conveniently at home with oral antibiotics. Meanwhile, higher-risk patients can rapidly receive key life-saving treatment steps to avert mortality and complications and to speed up recovery.
