An Ultrasound examination is the most commonly performed procedure at the Urology Centre. It is a readily available, painless and risk-free scan.
Our urologists routinely perform ultrasound examinations in clinic to assess the kidneys, bladder and prostate for conditions such as kidney swelling (hydronephrosis) and prostate enlargement.
No preparation is required by the patient before the procedure.
You will be asked to lie on a couch. A water-based gel, may feel slightly cold, is applied on the skin over the area of interest. This gel facilitates the transmission of sound waves through the body. A handheld probe is then maneuvered over the designated area.
In specific cases, the urologist may recommend a transrectal ultrasound biopsy, used primarily for prostate biopsy. This involves the insertion of a specially designed probe into the rectum to examine the prostate gland.
Ultrasound examinations pose no risks of radiation. Following the test, you can promptly resume your daily tasks without any delay or restrictions.
