Care at NUH

Division of Advanced Internal Medicine

2024/06/24

The Division of Advanced Internal Medicine (AIM) consists of general internists skilled in providing comprehensive care for individuals with multiple medical conditions or undifferentiated symptoms.  Our specialists are extensively trained across multiple disciplines, including cardiology, endocrinology, neurology, haematology, gastroenterology, nephrology, respiratory medicine, rheumatology, infectious diseases and more. This cross-disciplinary expertise allows us to offer holistic and coordinated care to adult patients, minimising their need to consult multiple subspecialists. All our specialists are accredited by the Ministry of Health’s Specialists Accreditation Board.

Beyond clinical services, the Division is actively involved in undergraduate medical education and graduate training for doctors and nurses. In our commitment to enhancing patient care, we lead innovative service developments such as the NUHS@Home service, AIM Supportive Care service, GENIE service and the Inpatient Definitive Care initiative.

Message from the Head of Division

Dr Daruisz Piotr Olszyna

Advancing Advanced Internal Medicine

Welcome to the Division of Advanced Internal Medicine. We are specialists who practise General Internal Medicine. As specialists in General Internal Medicine, we provide comprehensive care for adults in various settings—clinics, hospitals, and increasingly, in patients' own homes. Our holistic approach is tailored to meet the needs of our patients, who often present with multiple medical issues. We consider the context of families and communities in our care delivery, ensuring a patient-centric approach.

Our service range from treating acutely ill patients in units such as the Acute Medical Unit or Surgical High Dependency Unit, where we support surgical teams, to inpatient care in hospital wards and compassionate end-of-life care. In our outpatient clinics, consolidate treatment for multiple conditions, offering our patients the convenience of consulting with one medical specialist instead of multiple visits to different clinics. We have developed the NUHS@Home service that allows certain patients traditionally requiring hospital admission to receive quality care at home, with daily assessments by our doctors and nurses.

Our Advanced Internal Medicine Senior Residency programme is highly regarded in Singapore, attracting excellent candidates. Our team comprises dedicated clinical educators teaching medical students from both local and international medical schools. Our research spans clinical education and health services, with our work being presented in international forums.

We are excited about the future of General Internal Medicine in Singapore. We invite you to explore this webpage for more information about our doctors, research, administrative staff and our programmes.

    Our Services

    Clinics and Services

Our specialists provide both inpatient and outpatient services.

    Inpatient Services
Acute Medical Unit (AMU): Located near the Emergency Medicine Department (EMD), the AMU is a short-stay ward for patients transferred from the EMD. It provides early access to specialist care, including investigations, treatment and triage for discharge or further admission.

General Medicine Wards: Our inpatient wards care for a wide range of patients, including those with undifferentiated or complex medical issues and frail individuals. We adopt a multidisciplinary approach involving social workers and therapists.

NUHS@Home: A new hospital-at-home programme led by the division, NUHS@Home provides inpatient level care in the comfort of the patient’s home, in conjunction with the NUHS Regional Health Service. It includes daily doctor and nurse rounds, administration of intravenous medication, blood tests, and support from a multidisciplinary team that includes social workers and physiotherapists.

    Outpatient Services
AIM Specialist Clinic: Run by AIM specialists, this clinic offers integrated, holistic care for patients with undifferentiated or complex medical conditions.
Rapid Access Clinic: This clinic provides early specialist review for patients referred from our EMD who do not require admission.

One-Stop Internal Medicine Clinic: Managed by AIM specialists, Advanced Practise Nurses (APNs), and dietitians, this clinic offers comprehensive care to patients with multiple chronic conditions, streamlining their care under a single specialist.

Integrated Advanced Care Clinic (IACC): IACC provides end-of-life care to elderly, non-cancer patients not yet eligible for hospice. It focuses on Advance Care Planning, symptom management, disease education, and timely hospice referrals. New patients are accepted on a referral basis. Exclusion criteria include patients who are either bedbound, non-communicative or already enrolled in hospice.

For appointments, please contact us at the 13b Medicine Clinic.

GENIE-OSIM Programme: This initiative aims to minimise healthcare utilisation and care fragmentation for patients with complex chronic conditions, including fluid overload, cellulitis and diabetes complications. It integrates patients into a multidisciplinary team comprising advanced practice doctors, nurses, pharmacists and medical social workers. The programme features telehealth monitoring and a patient-activated hotline for acute conditions, facilitating appropriate triage into early clinic appointments, direct admission under NUHS@Home, or emergency department visits as a final option. The ethos of the program is centered on empowering every patient, including the most underserved, to take control of their health through the development of positive habits and a collaborative approach that engages caregivers and community support services.

    Our Education

    Postgraduate Education

Advanced Internal Medicine Senior Residency Program: A two-year programme that builds on basic internal medicine residency training, equipping graduates to provide excellent evidence-based medical care for adult patients.

As part of an academic medical centre with strong ties with the National University of Singapore (NUS), we offer exposure to top faculty, cutting-edge care and numerous opportunities for research. This programme allows the development of the broad expertise that is necessary to provide holistic and comprehensive patient care in general internal medicine.

For more information on postgraduate training opportunities, please visit this page.

    Undergraduate Education
In partnership with the NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, our division is actively involved in undergraduate medical training. We provide rotations, elective postings, and research opportunities for medical students, offering broad exposure to general and acute medicine.
