At the National University Joint Preservation Centre, our primary goal is to help individuals in maintaining an active lifestyle by preserving their joints. Our approach differs from joint replacement surgery as we focus on preserving the native joint to improve function.
To achieve this, we adopt a multi-disciplinary approach with a team of sports medicine specialists, surgeons and physiotherapists. We offer non-surgical options such as biologic injections combined with holistic rehabilitation programmes. Our team of sports surgeons perform ligament, meniscus and cartilage repairs. When needed, these surgeries can be combined with alignment correction using surgical osteotomies to correct limb malalignments.
Working collaboratively with you, we strive to create an individualised plan tailored to your specific goals. These treatment options can significantly enhance the likelihood of preserving your active lifestyle.
- Sports medicine consultation
- Injections (steroids, hyaluronic acid, platelet rich plasma)
- Physiotherapy strength and conditioning
- Sports surgery consultation (ligament reconstruction, meniscus and cartilage repair and corrective osteotomies)
- Advanced imaging modalities
Knee preservation serves as an alternative to knee replacement, wherein the entire knee joint is replaced with metal and polyethylene. Patients undergoing knee replacement are usually advised against continuing a lifestyle that involves excessive loading of the prosthesis, as this may affect its lifespan, resulting in early loosening and wear. Notably, high-impact activities like running is discouraged after total knee replacement by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS).
At the National University Joint Preservation Centre, we believe that age is just a number. If you are around 50 years old or younger and are keen to maintain an active lifestyle, we consider you a potential candidate for joint preservation.
