Shaw-NKF-NUH Children's Kidney Centre

Shaw-NKF-NUH Children's Kidney Centre

The Shaw-NKF-NUH Children's Kidney Centre, located in Ward 45, is jointly funded by the National Kidney Foundation and the Shaw Foundation. It is specially designed for the multidisciplinary holistic management of paediatric patients with kidney diseases and their families. Our doctors and nurses specialise in the care of paediatric patients undergoing dialysis and transplant procedures, as well as those receiving immunosuppressants for various kidney disorders. The ward has private rooms for family meetings with the medical team. Additionally, it is equipped with basic kitchen facilities for caregivers and includes a dedicated play area for children.

Dialysis Area

Our dialysis equipment is versatile, accommodating patients of various sizes, ranging from newborns to adolescents. Our programme is primarily an automated nightly home peritoneal dialysis programme, designed to facilitate the integration of our patients into educational and the work environments. In the peritoneal dialysis area, expertly trained paediatric dialysis nurses provide formal, one-to-one training in home automated peritoneal dialysis for both patients and their caregivers. Additionally, we perform simple outpatient procedures such as exit sites assessments and peritoneal equilibrium tests. Simple day therapy procedures, including the administration of intravenous drugs, are also available. In the haemodialysis area, we perform long-term haemodialysis for paediatric patients. We also offer training for home haemodialysis to select patients.

Outpatient Clinics

These clinics, located just next to the dialysis area, allow our dialysis, transplant and immunosuppressed patients to be seen promptly by our doctors and nurses, separate from other patients with possible acute infections like flu. The clinic also provides rooms for consultations with psychiatrists, psychologists, dietitians and social workers. Specially equipped rooms for child life, play and art therapies are also available here.

Renal Biopsy Room

Our renal biopsy team comprises paediatric nephrologists, paediatric radiologists, paediatric laboratory staff and doctors in charge of sedation. We have a dedicated room for renal biopsies, equipped with an ultrasound machine, sedation equipment and a microscope for immediate visualisation of biopsy samples.

9a Viva-University Children’s Cancer Centre

In partnership with the Viva Foundation, 9a Viva-University Children's Cancer Centre (VUC3) caters to infants, children and adolescents with cancer and blood diseases. At VUC3, our integrated, all-inclusive facility is designed to create a welcoming environment for our paediatric patients and their families.

Outpatient Consultation Clinics
Dedicated solely to children with cancer and blood diseases, our outpatient consultation rooms are designed to reduce the risk of possible infections from other children with respiratory illnesses. The waiting areas offer a comfortable space where parents can connect and offer mutual support. Additionally, we have a child-friendly waiting room and a separate room for teenage patients.

Point-Of-Care-Tests (POCT) for Full Blood Count and Onsite Pharmacy
Our patients benefit from reduced waiting times for Full Blood Count (FBC) results. Two full-time, expertly trained haematology technicians are on hand to promptly process FBCs and upload results into our real-time computerised patient care system within 15 minutes. Following consultation, chemotherapy orders are freshly prepared in the onsite pharmacy and administered in the Day Therapy Centre. Medications are dispensed onsite by dedicated oncology pharmacists.

Day Therapy Centre

The Day Therapy Centre features nine beds, each equipped with televisions, ensuring a comfortable environment for patients receiving chemotherapy treatments. Additionally, the centre includes four single beds designated for bone marrow transplant patients and one isolation bed. This setup enables the majority of our chemotherapy treatments to be administered on an outpatient basis.

Operating Hours

Mondays to Fridays: 8.00am to 8.00pm

Inpatient Centre

The Inpatient Centre has 17 beds, with five stem cell transplant rooms and three isolation rooms. The isolation rooms are specially designed to prevent infection, featuring dedicated negative pressure system and double-door isolation.

Each bed has a mounted television for entertainment and access to computer games. To cater to our patients’ caregivers, we provide broadband internet access, lounges and chairs that convert into overnight beds, as well as kitchen facilities.

Social workers from the Children’s Cancer Foundation run an on-site library and resource room, where patients and their parents can borrow sanitised toys and books for entertainment.

Additionally, dedicated play areas for children are conveniently located in various sections of the centre.

Stem Cell Transplantation Suite

The Stem Cell Transplantation Suite comprises five individual rooms, each equipped with High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA)-filtered positive pressure systems. Additionally, the suite features a dedicated HEPA-filtered exercise corridor, complete with motion-activated double-doors, a play area and a nursing counter.

This design enables severely immunocompromised children undergoing stem cell transplantation to move beyond the confines of their rooms. They can mobilise, exercise and play in a clean environment.

The suite also encourages interaction and mutual support among parents during the transplantation period. For those interested in physical activity, a treadmill and an exercise bicycle are available for use by parents and patients.

Ronald McDonald House® and Ronald McDonald Family Room® at NUH

Ronald McDonald House

Ronald McDonald House Charities® (RMHC) Singapore provides vital resources and compassionate care to children and their families in NUH via the Ronald McDonald House® and Ronald McDonald Family Room® programmes.

The Ronald McDonald House® and Ronald McDonald Family Room® at NUH are very special "homes away from home" for families of seriously ill children being treated at the hospital. At RMHC, we understand parents want to be close to their children while they are in the hospital and our Ronald McDonald House® and Ronald McDonald Family Rooms® can help to make that happen. If you are a registered guest, you may go back and forth between your child and our facilities whenever you want without leaving the hospital. We offer a home-like environment where parents can find respite from the anxiety and stress of the wards. The doctors, nurses and hospital staff are here to take good care of your seriously ill children and RMHC Singapore is here to help take care of you.

Our Ronald McDonald House® and Ronald McDonald Family Room® are open 24 hours a day for registered family members. If you would like to access our facilities, please register with our staff at Ronald McDonald House® in NUH between 9.00am and 9.00pm.

Thank you Ronald McDonald House Charities® Singapore

Ronald McDonald House Charities Logo

Holistic care for our patients starts before the patient arrives in the hospital. This is especially true for our non-ambulant patients with neuromuscular condition. Due to progressive muscle weakness, these children use motorised wheelchair for mobility. As such, coming to the hospital for clinic review poses extra challenges.

Although NUH is wheelchair accessible, patients may come from homes where it is hard for them to get to public transport like MRT or buses. Their bulky and heavy motorised wheelchairs also do not fit in regular taxis or family sedan cars. The additional costs of hiring an appropriate transport and safety issues during transit are important matters to address.

Toh Wee Yang
Our paediatric patient Toh Wee Yang as he alights the cab using the ramp.

On 5 July 2014, RMHC Singapore granted us funds to cover the transportation cost of our non-ambulant neuromuscular young patients. This enabled us to hire London cabs which have a wheelchair retention system to hold wheelchairs firm and secure during transit as well as accommodate most large motorised wheelchairs. The programme covers the cost of transport to NUH for any clinic visit as well as from NUH back to their homes safely.

It has made it easier for our non-ambulant young patients to come to NUH for their medical appointments and also relieves the search for a parking lot for the handicapped.

Beneficiaries of this programme would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to RMHC Singapore for helping their family.

Diagnostic Imaging (Space Station)

NUHkids Space Station

The Space Station is an initiative by KTP-NUCMI to improve quality and safety of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scans for children. It is funded by Ronald McDonald House Charities®. Our aim is to reduce the need for sedatives. To enhance the overall experience for your child, he or she can watch a movie during the scan while donning a special spacesuit and helmet to enter the spaceship!

Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is an MRI scan?

MRI stands for Magnetic Resonance Imaging, which is a safe and painless test that uses a strong magnetic field to obtain detailed pictures inside our body. The MRI scanner is a square machine with a tunnel in the middle. Your child will be placed on a table that slides into the tunnel for the MRI scan. He or she has to lie very still for the machine to obtain a clear image.

2. What is this space adventure about?

At our Space Station, your child will don a special suit and helmet in preparation for entering our space shuttle, which is also the MRI room. He or she can watch a movie during the scan.

With this space adventure, we hope that your child will enjoy the MRI scan instead of fearing it!

3. Can I be with my child during the MRI scan?

Of course! We would like you to enjoy the adventure together with your child. One parent can accompany the child into the MRI room.

4. What happens if my child cannot lie still or is too scared to do the MRI scan?

We will have to give your child sedation. This will put him or her to light sleep. Alternatively, the scan may be postponed to another day.

5. Does my child need to fast before the MRI scan?

In the event that your child requires sedation, we will need him or her to fast for at least 4 to 6 hours before the MRI scan. Your child's doctor will advise you accordingly.
