Established in May 1988, NUH's Department of Laboratory Medicine has evolved significantly over the years; adapting not only its physical environment but also refining its operational processes. We continuously stay at the forefront of advancements in laboratory methodologies and technologies. The NUH core laboratory boasts an automated and state-of-the-art chemistry and haematology track system. Our microbiology laboratory operates a fully certified BSL-3 facility. We also offer cytogenetics testing and a molecular diagnosis centre with a proven track record of excellence.
"We aim to lead in providing laboratory services designed to assist our customers with the diagnosis and treatment of disease, the promotion of health and the advancement of medical science"
The Department of Laboratory Medicine is committed to providing our patients and clinical clients with high quality laboratory services, consistently striving to surpass expectations.
To ensure sustainable quality, we regularly review our testing journey – from order to blood collection, specimen transportation, analytical processes in the laboratory and the release of results to the ordering clinician.
Our internal quality control processes provide our staff with a review of the accuracy and precision of each analyser and test, ensuring confidence in the testing of patient samples. Complementing these internal processes, mandatory external quality control procedures provide a periodic peer review comparison of our laboratory performance.
A key component of our quality management programme is continuous quality improvement, achieved through regular reviews of the quality and appropriateness of our laboratory services. Routine internal audits are conducted to assess adherence to our management programme, offering a platform for the evaluation of newly implemented processes and the maintenance of ongoing processes.

We have also implemented the Quality, Environmental, Occupational Health & Safety management system (QEHS) (ISO 14001 and OSHAS 18001).
Subscription to proficiency testing programmes is an integral part of our quality management programme, involving collaboration with various accrediting agencies.
National Proficiency Testing Programmes
The department comprises four major divisions: Clinical Chemistry, Haematology, Microbiology and Molecular Diagnosis Centre. We offer consultative services from experienced professionals across various disciplines, including clinical scientists and medical laboratory scientists, to assist clinicians in both diagnostic and research capacities.
Our department is able to extend our services to many local medical institutions, private laboratories, and countries in the Asia-Pacific region and beyond, through our NUH Referral Laboratory (NRL), a wholly owned subsidiary of NUH.
Clinical Chemistry
The core laboratory is a highly automated laboratory, providing round the clock services for a wide range of tests. Our comprehensive laboratory automation system provides centrifugation, aliquoting and archival services for all samples and analysis for basic chemistry and immunoassay tests.
Our testing menu includes blood gases, renal panel, liver panel, calcium studies, lipid studies, iron studies, cardiac studies, therapeutic drugs, immunosuppressant drugs, urine chemistries, urinalysis, fluid studies, rapid tests, endocrine parameters, specific proteins, first trimester testing and other miscellaneous tests.
The non-core laboratory performs serological testing for a wide range of infectious diseases and autoimmune diseases. Additionally, the laboratory is responsible for 24-hour donor transplant screening services. It also supports testing in myeloma gel work ups, free light chains, HbA1c, urine citrate and oxalate, pleural fluid ADA and oligoclonal band testing.
Our Point of Care (POC) services offer bedside tests beneficial to patient management. The test menu includes blood gases and electrolytes, glucose, PT/INR, glycated haemoglobin, haemoglobin, creatinine, urine dipsticks, and urine pregnancy test.
The Haematology Division comprises a range of routine and specialised tests, including full blood profiles, coagulation, fluid counts and erythrocyte sedimentation rate test. Our haematology staff also provide technical assistance for the collection of bone marrow biopsies and services in haemopathology.
Other focuses of haematology include haemoglobinopathies, bone marrow analysis, flow cytometric analysis, cytogenetics and blood transfusion.
The Flow Cytometry Laboratory performs flow cytometric analysis for the diagnosis, monitoring and treatment of patients with immunophenotype testing requests in blood, bone marrow and lymph node cell suspensions.
The Cytogenetics Laboratory provides chromosomal studies related to haematological and congenital / constitutional disorders; including chromosomal karyotyping and molecular cytogenetics by FISH (fluorescence in-situ hybridisation).
The Blood Transfusion Service ensures the delivery of safe, auditable and timely blood transfusion, meeting both local and international guidelines for good transfusion practice.
The Division of Microbiology provides a comprehensive range of services in bacteriology, mycology, virology, and parasitology.
The Molecular Diagnosis Centre (MDC) provides a wide range of diagnostic tests encompassing infectious diseases, genetic mutations, prenatal diagnosis, haemato-oncology, and pharmacogenetics.
