The NUH Women's Centre aims to be a centre of excellence in obstetrics & gynaecology in Southeast Asia. Our goal is to provide the finest clinical service to women and men seeking expertise in obstetric, gynaecologic and sexual health matters. We aim to lead in the frontiers of translational research by investing in relevant basic science and extending its impact into everyday clinical experiences.
As a leading tertiary hospital, we are committed to training undergraduates and postgraduates to be honourable clinician-scientists of impeccable stature - the future physicians that the country and the global community can take pride in.
We are a part of the National University Centre for Women and Children (NUWoC), a national university specialist centre that aims to empower women, children and their families to lead healthier lives.
To Serve, to Innovate and to Inspire.
Meeting the needs of our patients who trust us.
To be the premier tertiary referral centre in the region, built upon the dedication and passion of our people, our evidence-based research-focus patient care and our science.
We have five Clinical Divisions:
We are honoured to be associated with many distinguished clinicians and scientists in the past and the present. Some have dedicated many of their most fruitful years to our department, contributing more than their fair share to its recognition.
Here we pay tribute to some of these honourable individuals who have left an indelible mark and also influenced many practising obstetricians and gynaecologists far and wide.
The Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology was established in 1922.
Professor J S English served as the first Head of Department. During the initial years, the department's main focus was on the training of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists for the local institutional practice. Over the years, numerous outstanding clinicians have been trained in the Department, excelling in the membership examination of the Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists (United Kingdom). They have continued to serve in the Department or pursued exceptional careers locally or overseas.
In 1985, the University Department of O&G moved to the present site at the National University Hospital, marking a significant shift from Kandang Kerbau (KK) Maternity Hospital and its separation from the other two KK Units.
In the preceding 20 years, the Department has evolved into an internationally recognised centre for research and teaching. Under the leadership of Prof SS Ratnam, the department garnered global acclaim for its work on infertility and reproductive medicine. When Prof S Arulkumaran assumed leadership, the Department continued to be a focal point for research on intrapartum management.
Rather than resting on its laurels, the Department, even before the national emphasis on bioscience research, firmly established itself in molecular and stem-cell research. It remains committed to providing leadership in the latest biotechnology, seeking better clinical strategies for reproductive and female health.
Every birth, every newborn, every family is considered special here, and we pledge to provide you with safe and personalised care. As the medical teaching facility of the National University of Singapore, our specialist consultants are devoted to ensuring high standards of patient care, teaching and medical research.
The Division of Maternal Fetal Medicine specialises in High-Risk Obstetrics. Our team delivers comprehensive, multidisciplinary care for women and their unborn babies facing complications identified prior to or during pregnancy. Women with uncomplicated pregnancies are equally welcome and are supported by our qualified ambulatory and inpatient staff.
We have under one roof a comprehensive range of obstetrical services and prenatal foetal care facilities. Most of our patients experience a normal, healthy pregnancy and birth. However, major medical disciplines, including ICU care, neonatal care, cardiology, cardio-thoracic surgery and paediatric surgery, are available in the hospital should the need arise.
Obstetrics services include:
The Division of Benign Gynaecology has a dedicated team of doctors who provide quality patient care across a wide range of gynaecological issues, including contraception, abnormal bleeding, pelvic pain, hysterectomy, and all other conditions affecting women.
Our specialised areas include Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) and Urogynaecology. In MIS, we leverage integrated technologies such as robotic surgery, single port access surgery, and modern energy sources in clinical care. This approach facilitates faster recovery, reduced pain and lower wound complication rates. Our Urogynaecology programme provides complete diagnostic evaluation and informed discussions on various treatment modalities for pelvic floor reconstruction or strengthening, urinary leakage, bladder pain and other conditions related to the vagina, uterus, bladder, urethra and rectum.
Our team of doctors provide personalised and comprehensive women's care catering to patients of all ages and in all stages of life. The division maintains collaboration with the other Obstetrics & Gynaecology divisions, ensuring seamless care for our patients.
Gynaecology services include:
The Division of Gynaecologic Oncology provides complete women's cancer care from cancer screening and prevention to treatment and aftercare. We are committed to caring for you and equipping you with the information you need to make empowered decisions about your life and health.
Our range of services include:
The Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility offers a full range of fertility investigations and treatment options such as In-vitro Fertilisation (IVF), Intra-Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI), Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) as well as oocyte, embryo and sperm cryopreservation for patients who need assistance in achieving parenthood.
In addition to fertility treatment, we have specialists focused on the care of young adolescent and postmenopausal women. Together with our dedicated team of nurses and allied health professionals, we are committed to delivering personalised and comprehensive reproductive endocrine and infertility care to our patients.

The Division of Urogynaecology and Pelvic Reconstructive Surgery is dedicated to improving the quality of life for women dealing with urinary and faecal incontinence; bladder, bowel and sexual dysfunction; voiding difficulties; pelvic pain; pelvic organ prolapse; and pelvic floor disorders.
These conditions can affect women at various life stages, with urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse becoming more common after pregnancy, natural childbirth, menopause and with advanced age.
The female pelvis, including the pelvic floor, plays a crucial role in controlling urination, defecation, sexual, and reproductive functions. Disorders in this area can affect physical, psychological and emotional health and well-being.
Our approach involves a holistic combination of counselling, specialised investigations, and a range of conservative, medical and surgical treatments. Surgical options include vaginal, pelvic organ, pelvic floor and incontinence operations, including the minimally invasive tension-free vaginal tape (TVT) and TVT-obturator (TVT-O).
Established in 2010, CREST (Centre for Reproductive Education & Specialist Training) offers educational trainings focussed on Assisted Reproductive Techniques (ART).
Located within the National University Hospital (NUH) in Singapore, CREST was founded by Professor P. C. Wong, Emeritus Consultant from the Division of Reproductive Endocrinology & Infertility, Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. The centre was made possible through a donation from Merck Serono and Learning Initiatives for Fertility Experts (LIFE).
